how to make a receiver for a given rated transmitter?
i have to make a receiver for a given transmitter with known frequency and power ratings. further, what equipment i can use to know the signal strength?
Mostly, you need to know the channel.
Link budgets are often done on dB so that losses can be added.
So something like
source strength (power?) – channel losses = received signal strength (power?)
Then add the receiver & other noise.
Then often you will have a concept like detection threshold, that is the minimum signal to noise ratio that the receiver can detect the signal.
so if (source power – channel losses)/(total noise at receiver) > detection threshold then the link works.
So what is your link?
optical?
wire?
wireless?
ultrasonic?
What’s your transmission?
Information?
presence only, like a door minder looking for people going past?
1GB per second data?
Signals back from space-craft?
Ok, you get the idea. Give some more details & you;ll get better answers.
If it is simple wireless, then the channel will be the dominant factor.
If it is more realistic wireless, then multiple-path fading will be the dominant factor, causing destructive interference from multiple paths, scatterers. This affects reliability from second to second.
If it is really realistic, factor in a “noise” for other systems, other transmitters, and generally other interferers.
The things about these things is that they change with time, so measuring the signal strength can be a bit complicated too. Should do some stats on how often you need it to work & how often the channel will be too bad.
If it is a data link, then detection can be a bit complicated.
