Why does a Sopranos season 1 DVD look excellent on my old CRT TV, but pixelated and grainy on my new LCD TV?
Just bought a 52″ Sony XBR6 LCD television. Connected my Sony DVD player (with progressive scan) via a high quality HDMI cable to the TV. It doesn’t look nearly as clear as it did on my 36″ Sony CRT flatscreen tube TV. How can I fix this? Would a blu-ray player make more of a difference?
Because when going from DVD player to CRT you’re going SD to SD and only 36″. So one, you’re not having to do any kind of conversion. And second, you’re looking at it on a fairly small screen (smaller the screen the easier it is to hide image quality issues).
Now when you go to the new Sony, it sounds like you are up-scaling it (is your DVD player and upscaler?). If so, then well, while up-scaling devices are okay, they can only do so good of a job. You’re trying to invent information that doesn’t exist. Also, not all upscalers are created equal. The best up-scaler out there is an HD DVD player (too bad it lost the war). The one for the Xbox 360 is particularly good.
Also, 52″ LCD vs 36″ CRT, the CRT will have better blacks, contrast, and color. Modern LCDs are close, but not at par with CRT’s in some aspects of image quality. But few people care about the loss in quality on the LCD for the fact of how big they are compared to a CRT.
So there’s not a whole lot you can do to “fix” it. You just have to start getting used to the new landscape of viewing you’ve entered into with your new HDTV. It’s just the nature of the different technology.
