RCA rt2360 decode trueHD to be compatible with blu-ray?
I just bought a Panasonic 32″ Viera TV. I have an older home theater system: RCA rt2360 (300 watt 5.1 dolby surround sound). It has only AV, coaxial, and optical inputs; no HD-MI or HD component inputs. I would like to know if my receiver is compatible with a blue-ray player, or if I need to get a new one. I can get a player for around $150. A new theater system with an integrated blu-ray player would be around $350

As long as your current receiver has an optical input, you can use that with a blu ray player. You attach the blu ray into your tv with HDMI, you attach the blu ray player’s audio output with an optical into your receiver. Then choose bitstream as the blu ray’s audio output and you turn off the tv’s speakers. Choose the HDMI tv input and the receiver’s optical input and the sound is surround.
This set up won’t provide the latest and greatest sound out available on some few Blu ray disks which a direct HDMI connection would, but it’s still very good and compatible with over 90% of the sound output on blu rays.
