what is the difference between Direct and cross cable?
i have a few cables that i got from my uncle. But i can’t tell which is direct cable which is cross. if i wanna link two computers without hub, which cable do i need? my desktop does not have netword card installed so far. do i need it?
The way to tell if a cable is a cross over cable is to look at the wires in the cable. Hold the cable ends up together (side to side, not end to end) and see if the order of the colors in the cable match up (you can see the colors in the very end of the cable). A direct cable will have the wires in the same order. A crossover cable will have the orange wires and green wires switched (there are two sets of each color of wire orange, green, blue, and brown). If these cables are manufactured (your uncle didn’t make them himself), most crossover cables are red or orange.
To connect two computers without a hub, you will need a crossover cable. Both computers will need a network card and to be configured with an IP address.
